Hosts Lydia Chan and Oliver Atkinson open the new season by reflecting on key insights from Season 1
Casual has released the Season 2 premiere of its ‘Audience Connection’ podcast, marking a pivotal moment as brands increasingly invest in storytellers to navigate an AI-saturated content landscape. Hosts Lydia Chan and Oliver Atkinson open the new season by reflecting on key insights from Season 1, revealing how behavioural science, neuroscience, and cultural specificity shape which stories resonate and why.
The episode addresses a critical industry shift highlighted in a recent Wall Street Journal article noting that companies are "desperately seeking storytellers." As Oliver explains, "If you're not telling an authentic story, you aren't getting through. And the noise has become so great now that you have to do something different and you have to start telling stories." This urgency stems from what guests like neuroscientist Dr. Christopher Demetrakos identified as the "reticular activating system"—a cognitive filter that blocks irrelevant content, making targeted, culturally specific storytelling essential for brands seeking genuine audience connection.
Season 1 featured conversations with behavioural scientists, neuroscientists, and creative leaders including Dr. Paul Zak, who revealed that oxytocin and dopamine released during narrative immersion can predict business results with 97% accuracy. The hosts explore how this science validates traditional storytelling principles while providing what Oliver calls "the most bulletproof why" for creative decisions. Lydia emphasises that the science serves as a foundation: "The science and the data helps inform the inputs to the creative, but then you have to let the creative flourish from there. Because also at the end of the day, it's all about application."
Season 2 promises deeper explorations into interactive content, brand communities, creativity at scale, and the psychology of audience connection. With AI continuing to generate content at unprecedented volumes, the podcast positions authentic storytelling and trusted creative execution as the differentiators that will determine which brands break through the noise. As Lydia notes, "We need to be again, more focused on what exactly that volume of content is and being able to create content at scale that is very specific."
