Casual has released the latest episode of Audience Connection podcast featuring Michael Sternoff, global creative director at Amazon Leo, Amazon's low-Earth orbit satellite internet network. The episode examines how creative leaders translate complex technical concepts into authentic, emotionally resonant brand narratives.

Michael, an Emmy Award-winning filmmaker whose career spans documentary filmmaking and video game trailers, discusses the creative process behind Amazon Leo's brand launch film 'Countdown,' which premiered alongside the company's rebrand from Project Kuiper. In the episode, he emphasises the importance of early planning and stakeholder alignment in large organisations, explaining that 'Planning is everything' when creating brand films at scale. Michael details how the team began development in December 2023, months before launch, to ensure adequate time for concept testing and trust-building with cross-functional partners.

The conversation explores Michael's approach to authenticity in brand storytelling, particularly his practice of casting real people who live the experiences depicted on screen. Describing a scene featuring a fisherman, Michael recounts how the actor's insider knowledge enhanced the production's credibility: "Having casting that person that really knows how to present knows how, those, those, environments are operated is super, critical." He explains that this approach stems from lessons learned throughout his career, from his early days at the University of Montana where he learned that "everybody had a story and you could kind of find a story everywhere."

Addressing the ongoing tension between creative intuition and data-driven decision-making in marketing, Michael articulates a philosophy centred on long-term brand building rather than short-term metrics. "If it's a great story, people are going to stick around for it," he states, pushing back against optimisation pressures that have emerged with each wave of new technology. He emphasizes that brand impact often occurs through focused engagement with key decision-makers rather than massive reach, noting that unmeasurable resonance can be more valuable than high view counts.

The Audience Connection podcast, hosted by Lydia Chan and Oliver Atkinson, examines the psychological and behavioural principles behind effective storytelling. The episode is now available on major podcast platforms including Spotify and Apple Podcasts.
